The national currency is the Nuevo Sol (S/.) but the American dollar is usually used, especially in the touristic places.
The Euro can be changed moreover more in the large cities, con a rate sometimes more advantageous than that of the American dollar.
There is no problem with regard to the automatic teller machines, where it is in general possible to withdraw as well soles as dollars. But it should be known that the Visa card is often more current than the other cards (Mastercard or American Express). There is no problem either with regard to the exchange of the Travellers' cheques, which are negotiable in most of the Exchange Offices, if you are provided of course with your passport.
It is better in any event to change money in the Exchange Offices rather than in the street or in the banks because those offer more safety with regard to the counterfeit money and have more advantageous rates than in the banks (which have very often excessive commissions).
In conclusion, we say that if it is advantageous to arrive with € if one comes from Europe it is necessary all the same to reserve a part of ones budget in American dollars which is, for the moment, the currency practically changeable everywhere.
